Ular terlangka di dunia berjuang keluar dari ambang kepunahannya. Meski demikian, selama 15 tahun terakhir jumlah ular ini meningkat 10 kali lipat tapi masih terancam.
Peneliti manyatakan hanya terdapat 50 ular Antigua (Alsophis Antiguae) pada 1995. Ras ini menyebar di delapan hektar Great Bird Island di pantai Antigua, Karibia.
Ular ini terusir dari dataran utama oleh luwak. Selain itu, ular ini juga mendapat serangan dari tikus hitam di pulau itu.
Ular Antigua yang tak berbahaya ini juga mendapat ancaman dari manusia. Namun, 15 tahun terakhir, ahli konservasi memperhatikan masalah ini. Mereka telah memusnahkan lusinan tikus dari pulau, memberikan program edukasi dan berhasil meningkatkan populasi ular menjadi lebih dari 500 ular. Tempat tinggal ular ini juga meningkat menjadi 63 hektar.
Fauna and Flora International (FFI) bersama Durrell Wildlife di Jersey bekerja sama dalam proyek ini. Ahli biologi konservasi senior Dr Jenny Daltry mengatakan,Saya bangga berhasil membuktikan pesimisme ini salah dan mengubahnya menjadi keberuntungan bagi binatang-binatang itu.
Kunci membantu ular ini adalah memberikan dedikasi pada relawan lokal. Co-Ordinator Program Environmental Awareness Group, Natalya Lawrence, mengatakan,Meski populasi berhasil tumbuh berkali lipat, kita tak bisa berhenti sekarang.
Kesadaran publik masih perlu ditumbuhkan, pengawasan harus dilanjutkan dan hukum pelindung ular dan binatang terancam punah harus diperkuat.
